Has YouTube Changed the World of Education?

Everybody uses YouTube these days, no matter what age group you fall into, you have definitely taken advantage of the content that YouTube has to offer.  When YouTube first started it was mainly based around bedroom comedians making fun skits or makeup gurus teaching you how to apply the latest product. As time has gone on, YouTube has become a platform that offers employability and so many people have been taking to the platform to share their passions and knowledge. Because of this, youtube unexpectedly became a haven of learning and teaching new things and completely changed the world of education.

Variety

You can learn just about anything on YouTube and this is why it has become such an important educational tool. Are you struggling with school work and not quite understanding that new maths homework? Look it up on YouTube and you will have millions of videos show up that explains how to complete that pesky equation. A lot of teachers are also taking to youtube as a means of reaching out to their students, not everyone can learn easily in a school environment and so having these videos give people an opportunity to watch and rewatch until they understand how to do something.

It’s not just education at a juvenile level that YouTube has to offer. Because there are so many people on the platform sharing their hobbies and passions, you can learn to do just about everything. For example, gone are the days of having to call a plumber in to fix a small problem, you can simply look It up and youtube and find ways to fix any little issue you may have, for free.

Social Education

Not only does youtube give you the opportunity to learn new and potentially valuable life skills, but it also offers an education on the world around you. Social media has been connecting people all around the world for years now and youtube is no exception to this, youtube allows us to learn what is happening on the other side of the world and with this new information, we are able to make active differences. For example, youtube premiers all news channels from every country and so we are no longer limited to what we see in our local area, we can learn about what is happening everywhere in the world and gauge a deeper understanding of all cultures and all pressing issues that are currently occurring.

Due to its wide reach, it would be understandable if you would want to start your own channel and teach people about a subject that you care about. However, in such a competitive market it may seem discouraging to start a channel due to a lack of views. That’s not an issue as companies like themarketingheaven.com are known to provide YouTube views in order to improve their reach. This is something that many content creators use and allows you to get your content a bigger audience, so why not create an account and see what you could teach someone today?

Famous Scientists That Never Went to University

It can often seem that to even enter a field like science you must complete University with at least a 2:1, these scientists not only broke that trend but became greats without even stepping into a university.

Michael Faraday

Faraday is perhaps the most publicized scientist to never seek higher education. The British scientist was instrumental in the concept of the electromagnetic field and his experiments in electricity helped create the practical use we have today.  In a rather inspiration tale of perseverance Faraday only ever received the most basic of education and was instead forced to educate himself. This did not hinder his growth and still remains one of Britain’s most famous scientists, he has several statues dotted around London and he even has a plague in Westminster abbey.

Gregor Mendel

It would not be an overstatement to suggest that Mendel should be declared as the father of genetics as we know it. This was not always meant to be as due to financial and health reasons Mendel was forced to drop out of Palacký University in his first year. However, this did not hinder him, and he instead found an education in a monastery, as though this education was rather basic it was free. Mendel would use this education to discover and further study both `recessive` and `dominant` genes in plants, and then eventually humans. His work is still used and taught to this day.

Humphrey Davy

It is quite an interesting fact that at one point in time Davy`s lab assistant was the great Faraday with both men receiving no higher education, Davy once even joked that his greatest discovery was Faraday. This does discount the great work that Davy actually did manage to accomplish, just like his protégé Davy was an expert in the electric field, but he is most commonly known for his popularization of nitrous oxide as pain relief in surgery. Davy also invented the Davy lamp which should be seen as the predecessor to the arc lamp. Davy was known for his dry sense of humor and poetry along with his scientific accomplishments, a true great of British history.

James Croll

The great James Croll was actually one of the first mainstream climate scientist. Coming from the Scottish midlands Croll tried to create a link between the orbit of the earth and climate change. His work was highly revolutionary at the time and he would often collaborate with the great Charles Darwin. Croll never received any form of education often having to rely on books he found in his family’s attic, and in a rather ironic twist of fate, despite being self-educated all his life in 1876 Croll received an honorary degree from the prestigious University of St. Andrews.

Thomas Edison

To take this passage state side we should take a look at perhaps the most famous American inventor be it that of Thomas Edison. It is said that throughout his life Edison filed for 1093 patents on his inventions, this included film, the phonograph and perhaps most famously the incandescent light bulb. Despite this list of amazing inventions Edison only actually received a few months of formal education, and mainly relied on his mother and books he would finds in his home. This did not stop the great Edison as he was once quoted as saying “Genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration.” This quote truly sums up his nature and why he became the success he is, to find other inspirational quotes like this I would highly recommend checking powerful life quotes which documents inspirational and powerful quotes from some of histories greats.

Wright Brothers

This may shock many due to the confusing nature of flight, but the inventors in the Wright brothers never actually graduated from high school but managed to complete their first flight in the winter of 1903. The brothers actually credited there time out of the mainstream education system in achieving their great feet, as it allowed them to truly think outside the box. Both mischievous young boys they would be expelled from their elementary school though they received great scorn at the time, this would prove to be a true blessing in disguise.

After this passage I hope all young thinkers are filled with some new found hope, if these greats could achieve without the use of university, you can too. Just try think outside the box, and remember perseverance is your number one strength.

Is it Better to Educate Your Child at Home

Educating your child at home is a very personal and case sensitive decision to make, I would argue that it all depends on the child and should there be reasoning behind why the home would make a better learning environment then yes, it may be better to educate your child at home. Before making a decision, an important factor to consider would have to be whether removing your child from the social development they could gain from school is the right call. Removing your child from school it could affect their social development as they will be lacking constant interaction with both teachers and other pupils.

Teaching in the home environment can also be a very hard task as a clear distinction would have to be made between school and home life, this can be difficult when both these situations are in the same setting. Without this distinction of settings you may find that your child is hard to work with and they may struggle learning. To find out if it would be better to educate your child at home I would start with asking your child what they want to do, ensure you explain carefully and in detail how they would still have to do all the work they would at school and how important a decision making this drastic change would be.

Overall the question of whether it would be better to educate your child at home is a very personal one, should you feel that your child is not doing very well in terms of their education and you feel that this is down to maybe a social issue at school or the school as a learning environment then I would advise you to look into the prospect of educating your child at home.

How to Educate your Child at Home

For me the most important step when it comes to homeschooling your children would be making sure that as a parent you are ready to take on the burden of becoming a teacher, it is a hard task and unless you are both mentally and physically capable of being responsible for your child’s education then I would advise you re think. Done properly educating your child at home can be an incredibly rewarding experience as you are able to see firsthand when your child meets those all important milestones.

Another important factor when it comes to homeschooling your child is that you have an appropriate environment to teach, this is important as it is vital for there to be a clear distinction between the home environment and the school environment.

Without these strict boundaries in place you may find it difficult for your child to be productive as it can be hard for the home to change from a safe and fun place to place where they are required to sit down and learn. Something else to consider would be the physical materials that you need to be able to teach effectively, it’s not enough to just have a pen and paper, for all the different subjects different learning materials will be required and some may argue that the more creative learning methods are the most effective.

A final thing to consider when educating your child at home is that it is vital that a routine is established as quickly as possible. Creating a solid routine that is as close to the normal school

timetable is an important factor in encouraging your child to be as productive as possible It is also important that on a day to day basis the schedule is adhered to, just because your homeschooling a good structure is vital.
