All the Qualifications you Need to Become a Vet

It is well known how difficult it is to get into medicine or become a doctor, only the brightest and most driven students are accepted onto courses provided that they’ve excelled during all of their school years, after acceptance it gets even harder with 7 years of studying after high school, countless exams and having to remember a lot of content.

What is lesser known is that becoming a vet is an equally difficult process. A doctor has to diagnose patients from anemia to infections, a vet also has to diagnose patients but without being able to speak to the patient making their job much harder. They have to know what all sorts of symptoms mean for your animal and determine if your cat has a sensitive stomach or if it’s something more serious, as an example. It’s a difficult profession to get into so you’ll want to think about if it’s really right for you and if you can get all of the qualifications that you need to succeed.

What does a vet do?

Being a vet is a challenging but rewarding job, there are various areas of work that a vet may choose to specialize in, they may work with house pets, farm animals, or zoo animals, some vets are so well trained they can mix between all three allowing for many more job opportunities. Every day at work as a vet would be a wildly different experience as they will come across different problems with different animals every single day.

Their main job responsibility is to care for the health of animals however they can. Some ways in which they do this is by diagnosing animals correctly and taking care when doing so to not prescribe the wrong things and make an animal worse rather than better. They are also responsible for carrying out general checkups on animals, providing owners or zookeepers with accurate advice to allow for the best quality of life for the animals. People also take their animals to the vets to get neutered so they’re responsible for population control. While some days as a vet may be extremely rewarding when you help or save an animal, some days are much tougher as vets are also responsible for putting animals to sleep when they’re reaching the end of their lives which can be a tough thing to do. If you think all of this sounds like a job you’d want then as long as you’re patient, caring, and knowledgeable then you will thrive as a vet.

The Qualifications

So if you’ve decided that becoming a vet is your true calling then you have to start working towards it very young. Firstly, you need to make sure that you do well in high school, only those with the highest grades will be accepted onto higher education courses. There are some great veterinary science degrees available including at the University of California, Cornell University, and Colorado State University. These undergraduate degrees are usually 4 years long and cover many topics such as infectious diseases in animals, management of diseases, pathology, and research skills so hopefully, you can add to the veterinary field once you’re fully qualified.

Following this you’ll have a great foundation of knowledge to continue onto the next stage of your journey, you’ll need to complete another 3-4 years course to earn the title Doctor of Veterinary, which includes more advanced topics like radiology, anatomy, and parasitology. If you put the hard work in and make it to this point you’ll know veterinary science inside and out and you’ll be close to becoming a fully qualified vet.

Once you’ve completed this before you can begin to practice you’ll have to obtain a license as it’s a requirement in the United States that all veterinarians have one to offer their services legally. If you have your Doctor of Veterinary then you’ll just have one more exam to complete. There are various professional bodies you can get a certificate from, but if you’re looking to sit the easiest exam after 7/8 years of studying then the North American Veterinary Licensing exam is widely know to be the easiest one to pass.

Has YouTube Changed the World of Education?

Has YouTube Changed the World of Education?

Everybody uses YouTube these days, no matter what age group you fall into, you have definitely taken advantage of the content that YouTube has to offer.  When YouTube first started it was mainly based around bedroom comedians making fun skits or makeup gurus teaching you how to apply the latest product. As time has gone on, YouTube has become a platform that offers employability and so many people have been taking to the platform to share their passions and knowledge. Because of this, youtube unexpectedly became a haven of learning and teaching new things and completely changed the world of education.

Variety

You can learn just about anything on YouTube and this is why it has become such an important educational tool. Are you struggling with school work and not quite understanding that new maths homework? Look it up on YouTube and you will have millions of videos show up that explains how to complete that pesky equation. A lot of teachers are also taking to youtube as a means of reaching out to their students, not everyone can learn easily in a school environment and so having these videos give people an opportunity to watch and rewatch until they understand how to do something.

It’s not just education at a juvenile level that YouTube has to offer. Because there are so many people on the platform sharing their hobbies and passions, you can learn to do just about everything. For example, gone are the days of having to call a plumber in to fix a small problem, you can simply look It up and youtube and find ways to fix any little issue you may have, for free.

Social Education

Not only does youtube give you the opportunity to learn new and potentially valuable life skills, but it also offers an education on the world around you. Social media has been connecting people all around the world for years now and youtube is no exception to this, youtube allows us to learn what is happening on the other side of the world and with this new information, we are able to make active differences. For example, youtube premiers all news channels from every country and so we are no longer limited to what we see in our local area, we can learn about what is happening everywhere in the world and gauge a deeper understanding of all cultures and all pressing issues that are currently occurring.

Due to its wide reach, it would be understandable if you would want to start your own channel and teach people about a subject that you care about. However, in such a competitive market it may seem discouraging to start a channel due to a lack of views. That’s not an issue as companies like themarketingheaven.com are known to provide YouTube views in order to improve their reach. This is something that many content creators use and allows you to get your content a bigger audience, so why not create an account and see what you could teach someone today?

Studying Medicine: What Field is Right for me?

Studying Medicine: What Field is Right for me?

Studying medicine is one of the most worthwhile and noblest fields of study available to us. Medicine is about more than simply understanding the body and what drugs do what. It is about making an oath to do no harm. To help those in need and strive to make the world better than you found it.

But platitudes aside, studying medicine is tough for several reasons. Firstly, it requires mental fortitude and resilience not required in a lot of other fields. You cannot make mistakes in medicine as it may cost someone their life. Those studying it need to be absolute in their studying and take everything seriously.

Secondly, there is just so much of it. That is why no one studies every aspect of medicine. People specialize. It is why surgeons don’t often spend a lot of time diagnosing. It is why nurses don’t perform open-heart surgery. It is why oncologists don’t get called in for dental issues. People have to specialize. The phrase ‘Jack of All but master of none’ springs to mind.

And this is the first hurdle any budding medical applicant faces. What do I study? What field of medicine is right for me? And it is a daunting choice. So we are going to look at a few different fields of the medical field and highlight their challenges and what sort of person is best suited for them.

Marketing

You must be curious. How is marketing a medical field? And it isn’t. Not really. But is it important? Absolutely. The world of marketing is about more than simply selling products. It is about providing information. And when it comes to health, wellbeing, and medicine, incorrect information is deadly. That is why the medical field needs people who are trained and educated in the medical field to step into the world of marketing. They need experts to advise them. A great example of this is medical spas, a new powerhouse in the private medical sector. Companies like practicebloom offer medical spa marketing services but to do this properly they need medical experts to advise them, otherwise, people could get hurt.

The upside to this is you won’t be interacting with patients, rather dealing with the medical profession and other business entities. So anyone who is looking to step into this field needs to be confident, reliable, and able to navigate the often-cut-throat world of business.

Oncology

Oncology is one of the most respected, and difficult fields of medicine to deal with emotionally. Oncology is the study of, diagnosis of and treatment of cancer. Cancer is one of the evillest and heart-breaking illnesses mankind has ever faced. It endlessly takes people away from their loved ones. This is why this field of medicine requires someone with strong mental fortitude and emotional balance. Giving bad news is part of being a doctor, but in the field of oncology, most of the news is bad.

The medicine itself is complex, yet very well understood. Research into cancer has been intense for countless years and, as such, we have a well-documented and strong understand of cancer and how it works. Most of your time will be spent either administering cancer treatments, such as chemotherapy, diagnosing people, or simply talking to your patients. Being an oncologist requires you to be a therapist as well. You need to be warm, comforting, and reassuring, while always remaining firm.

Radiology

Radiology is a different field of medicine. It is centered around using imaging devices to scan patients’ bodies and examine inside of them, without ever cutting them open. You might think anyone can do this, but the devices that radiologists use don’t simply create crystal clear pictures. The images are difficult to interpret and require extensive training. A mistake in reading an image could lead to serious consequences. People who move into radiology often are more concerned with solving puzzles and using tech, rather than directly dealing with patients.

Surgery

Known as Sawbones, surgeons are responsible for carrying out the complex operations that can save lives. The human body is a well-evolved machine, but it is packed tight. And opening it up can be dangerous. That is why surgery is one of the most intense, complex, and rigorously trained fields of medicine. One slip while someone is cut open and it could mean death. Only those with a steady hand and a firm constitution should take up this practice. Surgery is not quick either. Some big surgeries can last anywhere from 7 hours to multiple days. For those that do dive into this field, it is very rewarding. Surgery can change people’s lives and give them a second chance they never thought they would get.

How Active Learning is Changing the World of Education

How Active Learning is Changing the World of Education

Education is the pillar our modern society is built upon. Without it, none of the advancements we take for granted would exist. We would not be where we are today as a species. But the system of education has been shifting and changing and growing for hundreds of thousands of years. But this does not mean it is anywhere near perfect, or even that good. Our current education system is very much based off a capitalist system that seeks to educate by piling information onto a student and then rolling out standardised tests. A flawed and often criticised system. But this is where active learning comes in.

What is it?

Active learning is a term that encompasses any teaching style that aims to get a student more involved in the learning process. This does not simply mean getting them to turn up to school. It means the students are a key part of the lesson process. They are not simply fed information and expected to take notes. Most traditional schools already utilise a minor aspect of active learning in the form of asking questions. Getting students to think of an answer is getting them to actively engage. But how is this method being taken further?

How is it Used?

A lot of progressive schools and tutors are creating lesson plans that utilise active learning to a much higher degree. Educational games are a fantastic way of getting a student involved. For younger students, teachers often play a game of this or that to stimulate memory and association within the student. Other games, such as pairs, picture association and word search are other great ways of getting students actively involved.

For older students, teachers are holding their lessons in a more forum discussion system, rather than a lecture. They will ask the students to come prepared with the information they have studied on the topic and then, as a group, will discuss and ask questions to the teacher, and each other. This is a great way to get them viewing the topic from their own point of view while also opening their mind up to the views of their classmates.

Why it Works

Different students approach learning differently. It is a mix of nature and nurture in how they learn. It is impossible to find a ‘one size fits all’ approach to teaching. And this is why active learning works. It allows students and teachers to discover what works for them and create a more open, and friendly environment that takes into consideration the needs of every student, not just those with more traditional learning capabilities.

Active learning can often be more fun and engaging than someone simply rattling off a bit list of information. At young ages, children are more inclined to give their attention and learning powers, to something that entertains them. Active learning has been proven to improve information retention in activities where the students are having fun while learning. This is why educational games and lessons where students participate are favoured by progressive educators.

Challenging the System

A lot of the older, more traditional educators, push back against active learning, citing that the system has worked for hundreds of years so it does not need changing. These people fail to see that the current educational systems have failed, past tense. Millions of people every year feel failed by their educational systems and wish for a change in how the world deals with education. It is a right, not a privilege that should be accessible to only those suited to deal with the current system. This is why active learning is causing such an upheaval in the education circles. It is challenging the systems that are currently maintained by powerful institutions and people who have been in the field for countless years. But it seems active learning is steamrolling its way across the globe and will soon become the major, and accepted, method of teaching. Particularly in schools for younger children. Active learning is also encouraging more young people to look at turning to a career in education. Now that their lessons can be fun and engaging, they are more willing to dedicate their lives to the noblest of professions.
